I am a music history major and my profesor is huge in the musicology world... think this way, Grout is the Bible plain and simple. Then comes other sources depending on what your reading level is and how much you want to dive into the other arts, ie Stanley Sadie the Cambridge Music Guide...If you want something that is really basic and hits main points for jsut begining knowledge..my suggestion is the HarperColling College OUtline for the History of Western Music...its brief and easy to read and in outline form for quick reference.
