Just a little late comment. I had to have a crown placed on a tooth (whose surface was mostly amalgam filling) that disintegrated while masticating (gulp) Raisin Bran!

I didn't have a choice of repair. The crown (porcelain) felt a little funny for the first few days, but I quickly forgot about it. A careful dentist can match the grinding/cutting surface exactly, so you get a fully functional "new" tooth. They can even match the shade of white to your own coffee/cola/age-discolored choppers.

Bon Apetit!
