Here's an example: I have been trying to learn to slur up and down between pedal Bb and low-low D (23&4) on my BBb tuba. In middle and high register I would simply practice such slurs up and down many times with one breath, over and over, until they became easy. But down in the pedal register I just don't have the lungs for it. I run out of air after 3 or 4 notes. I know there are players with bigger lungs and better chops than mine, but I suspect even the greatest must run into a similar problem if they go low enough.
