Yes, I aimed for the same spot. I even used the same fingernail, heh, heh.

And, yes, there was tape on that spot. The cushioning effect would reduce the magnitude of the acceleration imparted to the bookend, which would lower the magnitude of the ring. I did notice that. It makes the point more strongly, too, because without that effect the two rings would have been even more similar.
