We have to be really careful about defining tuba sound too narrowly. That sound in your head might be quite different from the sound in mine, but they are both tuba sounds. If you play the Meinl CD to anyone on the planet who has heard enough instrumental playing to have an opinion, they would tell you without hesitation that the sounds on that CD were made by tubas. Those sounds could not have been made by bass trumpets, bass trombones, euphoniums (excepting the high parts, of course), string basses, electric basses, bassoons, organs, pianos, or didjeridoos. Thus, they are characteristic tuba sounds, even though some of us might not consider them to be ideal sounds in any given setting.
