Getzen started manufacturing instruments in 1946, producing 1,000 trombones that year. The early Getzen instruments were very well-made. In 1960, T.J. Getzen sold the company to a Milwaukee attorney. The Getzens were still in the music business elsewhere, running Allied Music. In 1989, under the direction of one of T.J.'s grandsons, Edward Getzen, Allied produced its first Edwards trombones, which are very fine instruments. In 1991, the Getzen company declared bankruptcy, and T.J. Getzen's grandsons bought the company back, so Getzen has been under family control again since 1991. Getzen instruments may have been better at some times than at others, but they never were "crap". They build as good an instrument as anyone today.
I have played a Yamaha bass trombone, even professionally, but I would prefer to own the Edwards.
