You write: We start with a factual statement: "The chair has been covered very well for the last two years."

Well, factually, the chair has been covered for the last two years. It is someone's opinion that it has been covered 'very well.' You are correct in saying that regardless of how the chair has been covered, the position will be awarded, or not, to someone of the orchestra's choosing that may or may not be the current musician.

BTW, what does the union have to do with this? A temporary contract with the current seat holder has lasted for two years. I'm sure he knew there would be an audition before he or anyone else might be awarded a chance at a tenure track seat in the orchestra. Why all the fuss?
