I'm far, far away from the audition thing; I auditioned twice on violin and was accepted both times, but it's a completely different deal getting accepted to a section of 16 than it is getting the single position. There is still competition, but you don't have to be "the very best."
But those of you who are in this audition way of life.....do you manage to get a recording of the winner, and of yourself, and analyze the differences? It would seem that over time information could be gleaned that might put you over the top for the next audition. For me anyway, it would be less frustrating than just going back to the practice room and having at it again.
