Rick, my usual position in a quintet is as the horn player. How "good" is your horn player? Do you get the usual cracked notes? I find it very hard to blend the horn sound with the rest of the instruments; unless played very brightly, it sounds like it has a blanket in it, in comparison. I've wondered how others deal with this. I don't have a real dark sound, either, with my European brass horn.
