When my high school band has played for elementary schools, here's what I've noticed.

Kids like music they've heard before or been taught about. A concert sutie of the nutcracker around christmas will get more kid applause than anything else, I think. ;-)

When our marching band performed, the only thing they really liked was the tuba section. We were the two tallest and biggest guys in the band, and add that to the big bright silver sousaphones, and whe had their attention the minute we came in the door. It's hard to keep from grinning your mouth off when 4-500 kids say "Whhhoooooaaaaa......" in unison.

So, yeah, I second Jeff's suggestion. Big horns, shiny horns, big bells, loud stuff, familiar stuff, fun stuff.

I've always thought "Tuba tiger rag" would be a BIG hit in elementary schools. :-D
