I was never into the 'why' of things. In studying the score years ago with Ron Bishop, he and I made corrections to my solo part. I have the Denis Wick band arrangement and his corrections are the same as my own. Without going into extensive melodic discussions, of which I'll be way out of my league, suffice it to say that the corrections that were made for and by me years ago in the first movement are correct. In addition, by using some common sense and thinking of the slurs in the second movement as phrase markings, you will come up with a better way to play the second as well.
Some of this is my opinion and some of previous teachers so you can take all I say with a grain of salt.
