My experience is that a big-horn player will try to produce a sound on an F tuba that appears to match the sound that that player hears when he plays the larger horn. Often the resulting sound strikes others as being unfocused because the player's mental image of the desired sound is flawed. After spending years using the Mirafone C-3 mp on both my F tuba and Eb, I followed the advice of Bob Tucci in trying his PT-20 (1) mouthpiece, which is substantially more shallow and smaller in the backbore than the C-3. The result is a more attractive F tuba sound, better intonation and greater focus in the low range (although still far short of that of the Yamahas that are now on the market). I do think that when high volume levels are required, I will still use a larger mp on the F.
