Basically, if they don't want you there, you're better off if they do get rid of you. While it may seem a large blow to one's self esteem (Was I not good enough for that job?), usually the case boils down to playing the politics in the world of academia. I have seen excellent professors let go for no real reason other than they made the others feel insecure.
I myself recently changed jobs feeling the pressure coming. After I quit, i found out one person with a vendetta was already trying to fire me. Thankfully, they didn't and my case made them look a little more foolish then they already did.
I think we are seeing another case of the "Peter Principle" and it's negative effects.
