I must point out that this is incorrect. Copying to circumvent purchase, no matter how you disguise it is illegal. If a friend of yours buys an excerpt book and you copy it so you don't have to purchase it, that is illegal. Based on your statement, band director A could let band director B copy his Standard of Excellence method books and it would be legal since method books are for personal use and as long as the director doesn't sell them to his students. Permission to photocopy can only be given by the publisher, and usually granted when something is out of print (no longer purchaseable). Some publishers may give you permission to perform from a copied text but usually under command to destroy it upon completion. These are often-ignored laws (like removing mattress tags) but illegal nonetheless.
