I've played a EEflat (Willson) in bands/orchestras etc for years and managed to acheive a reasonably big sound that's satisfied most conductors. Francis McBeth (band conductor/composer) was surprised when I told him it was 'only' a EEflat, and his pieces require a big bass end. A good player on a good EEflat horn should be able to get the low notes...I used one in Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem, and that reaches a D (or is it lower???)
I've recently swapped to CC for the big ensembles, but will stick to the EEflat for quintet. I've always considered it to be a good all-round instrument, and if you can only afford one...
