I would get them as far away as possible from the storm. Have considered stuffing your clothing/possessions down the bell, and using them as "baggage?" Naturally, hard cases protect them better than soft cases. In the future I would make sure that the instruments are fully insured for their replacement value. You might need an assessment of the instruments, and you can have a rider put onto your house insurance. Insurance is also avilable through a company that has an agreement with the musician's union. I have even heard of a chamber music society that has a pretty good policy available.
