When the Zeiss tubas were imported by DeKalb (?) Music in Georgia, a nickle silver tuba was offered as an option. A fellow student bought one. It was SOLID nickle silver (heavy as I remember) but played well.
There have been some interesting studies as to how the material affects the quality of sound, unfortunately most have referenced organ pipes.
One NTU graduate study found that of five tubas Mirafone 188's, the test group of musicians (no visual reference) thought that the two most different sounding were the two silver-plated tubas. Go figure.
