Put in my vote for the 3301. We got a new set of S-186's at our university, and those players still like my 3302 better than their Mirafones. I've had numerous good players tell me that it's one of the best tubas of any kind they've ever played -- I think VMI popped out a real gem with this model.

I have been told of a HS section that was using 3301's playing Symphonic Metamorphoses at a concert, and the comment was that they sounded fantastic.

The 4-piston/1-rotor 3302 is at the top of your price point, but it can be worth it. However, both models play false tones really well, and when the kids learn how to handle those notes, they'll give a great bottom end, even without the 5th.

BTW, the VMI brochure I have lists a 2105, which is a 5-rotor version of the 2103 BBb tuba. That would be interesting if you could find somebody who carries it --
