Have you considered a recording-bell tuba? It would provide direct projection without sitting on your shoulder. Older ones seem to come up for sale quite often, and as they aren't normally used in some performance situations, (brass quintet, for example) they are usually fairly reasonable. I know this doesn't answer your original question; just a thought.
