You have my sympathy, believe me. I never won anything like that,
but music was a lot of fun for me. It was not, however, my livelihood.
One day, we may wake up and find that we've killed off the creative soul of
our culture through nonsense such as what you described. I don't know
if you've seen "Mr. Holland's Opus," but if you haven't seen it you
ought to rent it. There's a great scene in which Holland, a high school
band director, is protesting budget cuts that delete the "arts" programs
but leave the basic disciplines reading, writing and 'rithmetic intact.
Holland warns (my paraphrase because I don't recall the exact words)
that if this budget reduction goes through and the arts are cut, one day
they'll wake up and find that they have nothing do write about.
I really believe that music is a transcendant thing that reaches the human
spirit in ways that written or spoken words never manage. One of
our saints, Jerome I think, said "He who sings prays twice."
It's wonderful to have playing music as an occupation.
It's just sad that the economic situation surrounding it is what
you and others in this thread have described.
