Well, yes and no. Check out the discussion of compensating tubas in Don Stauffer's "A Treatise on the Tuba". He refers to the comp Eb Bessons as "double tubas'. That is, the fourth valve puts them in BBb, with all of the correct slide adjustments being performed by the compensating loops. Interesting way of thinking about it--so, maybe the 981 is a contrabass tuba after all.
