I was wondering if this sound problem is occurring in all ranges? If this is only occurring in the low register than I would suggest playing in the registers which sound better and try to transfer the same sound quality to the low register. If the sound problem is occurring in all registers than the problem might be that your embouchure is spread too much. The only way that I have found to fix a problem like this, and believe me I suffered this on my tuba, is to buzz simple melodies and songs that you know starting in a comfortable range and dynamic level. I bought an analog decible meter too aid me in getting more sound out of my buzz. I found this to be a very helpful tool for me and they can be purchased at any radio shack. Lastly, try playing simple songs and melodies on the trombone. Play this and try to imitate Doug You. This might also help. This is what worked for me to solve my sound problems. I hope this was helpful to you.
