I like to use a large bifocal called "smart-seg". The lower part comes up higher on the lens than a normal bifocal, and you can see a larger area for reading music if you have them focused further away. They work a little like a tri-focal withou the extra line. It comes from Lenscrafters, but Eyemasters will do them on special order, too(took them a couple of times to get them right); and probably many other places, as well. When I go in for an eye check, I have two different prescriptions made with this lens. One for normal reading and one that focuses in at about 4 ft. I can see the floor clearly when I stand up! Great with reading for string bass, especially.
