Clue #1: they are professionals. If you could go to home depot and get the same results from a spray can, they would be doing something else for a living and we would have more money to try different mouthpieces.

We've hashed this out before, talking about different kinds of wax finishes, etc. Some say wax helps but doesn't do anywhere near the job lacquer does (my own experience), some say wax does nothing at all. Some sit in slack-jawed wonderment that anyone would care whether their instrument is shiny. But if you are after a lasting shine on your tuba, you must either pay to have it lacquered or plated, or wrap it in aluminum foil!

And really, sorry about busting your chops on the cheapo route. I'm just bitter that I can't do it myself!
