Art,
I'm a UK grad, having studied under the late Rex Conner and I happen to have both horns in my possession. The Yamaha has a brighter sound, great for my jazz; the St. Pete has a much darker sound and is quite susrprisingly in tune throughout the range. The St. Pete is shorter than the Yamaha (I'm 6'4" so this is an issue), but it is a grand ensemble instrument. Great pedal tones!!

I like them both and wholeheartedly endorse the sise-by-side comparison suggested by out more serious bretheren. However, for the price of the St. Pete one can purchase a VMI or once in a blue moon a blemished Meinl model 25. Hope this helps
