Actually, I'm a bit intrigued by this topic. Mr. Jacobs, in the recently released CD, plays several orchestral excerpts with considerable vibrato. In the solo presentation of the excerpt, the vibrato was musical and beautiful. But in the excerpt from the orchestral performance of the same passage that followed, the vibrato seem nearly absent. I wonder if Jacobs uses more vibrato in solo settings than in ensemble settings. The excerpt I'm thinking of is the brass recitative in the Berlioz Romeo and Juliet. Any thoughts?
