Perhaps this student does not have a strongly developed concept of just how it SHOULD sound. Maybe some listening on her part to some demonstrative recordings would be helpful. Something to emulate... Maybe some Empire Brass CDs with Sam Pilafian on tuba or some old Philip Jones recordings with John Fletcher. There are many more out there but these feature the tuba played very beautifully, in the context of an ensemble, in a very refined approach, over the entire dynamic range. I've seen it work with some of my students. Good luck.
