Back when Orpheus Music was sort of the main entry point of Miraphone tubas, they sent me a HUGE (is "Kaiser" the word?) mouthpipe which I put on a goldbrass 188. I liked it a lot better than the original pipe (as 188's are sort of "stuffy"), but I still liked the Rudy 4/4 sound and feel better (I had both tubas at the time), so even though the 188 is just about the most in-tune tuba that there is and Rudy's are notoriously problematic, I sold the 188 and kept the RM-4/4. Now, I have neither instrument, hoping to stumble across or eventually put together a "holy grail" with (maybe close to) the intonation of a 188 and the lovely resonance of an old fat-bell tuba (' probably won't succeed...I haven't seen one yet that meets this description).
