I played trumpet starting in 4th grade, never with much commitment. Around the end of my freshman year in high school, my friend Phil, who was a junior (and the school's only tuba player), decided the school needed a second tuba player. The conversation consisted of, "Hey Murphy, wanna play tuba?" "OK." And that was that. I dreaded the change for a while, wondering what in God's name possessed me to play the tuba...then I tried it for the first time. Now, 3-4 years later, I'm getting ready to buy my own horn for college (the financial aid people better hurry up with this loan crap, I don't have much time left....but that's another story for another post.)
