This is not the best way to get an accurate reading and is also a good way to throw off the calibration of your micrometer. There are attachments that you can get for a micrometer that will allow accurate measurements on curved surfaces. It consists of rubber caps that hold a single ball bearing on each end of the micrometer. After the measurement is taken you subtract the diameter of the balls. These attachments should be available where you purchased your micrometer.
