One thing that will help immensely will be to listen to great players that have big sounds. Personally, I listen to and try to emulate players' sounds such as Ellis Wean, Warren Deck and Dave Fedderly. Do as much listening as you can. Get that sound or combination of sounds firmly engrained in your head. This will, to some degree, take care of whatever has to happen physically to produce the sound you hear in your head.

The rest is all air. Dan Perantoni's phrase of "slow down your air" pops to mind. Slow moving air in large quantities helps to produce a large, thick sound.

Also keep in mind that every instrument has its limitations. It is unlikely that a player can make nearly as large a sound on a Mirafone 184 as he/she can on Rudy Meinl 5/4.
