I think you should get *2* usable (even if not pretty) used horns with HARD CASES. Avoid "dent bags" like the plague. Middle-school (and high school) band rooms have LOTS of projectiles (especially near the percussion section) and that Big tuba bell is an inviting target. Having 2 horns would make it LOTS easier for her to practice. Dillons has VERY nice used horns (maybe too nice for middle school), and Auction sites have decent horns too ( I see a Yama-102 w/case for $795 on one right now). *IF* she is still serious about tuba 4 years from now (sophomore in H.S.), It would then be time to make a move to a better horn.

For now, the money is much better spent on lessons, and 2 having horns to allow easier home practice.
