The "ironman" types you mention are in abundance in high school bands across the nation. I wish they would play football instead.

As to the "boring" parts that high school tubists are faced with, I think it would be good for players to try to rearrange their perception of the notes they see on the page. In an earler post, someone quoted Dr. Revelli (former conductor of the awesome University of Michigan Symphonic Band): "Each note a pearl." It's true. However humble the piece, every note deserves to be played in tune, with good tone quality and proper dynamic level, and with rhythmic precision. All of these factors can be an interesting challenge for young players, and can help overcome the boredom.
