Take a look at Chuck's post. These things have no particular form and vary greatly with respect to the stuff that is hung on them. Mine has a banjo/tamborine with two strings in the center section with bells, wood blocks, cymbals, and the like hanging elsewhere. Basically, it is banged on the floor and struck with a drumstick or mallet.
