Dear Tom:

I have never set down an absolute rule that EVERYONE must march. I have made exceptions in the past, but not over fear of playing problems, they have been over medical or physical problems. For most students, marching band is the most fun part of band, and a great number of them probably would drop "sit-down band" (as they call it) if it were not for the marching ensemble, the rest of the students view it as some sort of necessary evil. I spoke with the previous band director of this school and he said that about 4 years ago he let a oboe-ist (male) play bass drum instead of clarinet, but that is a bit different.
I really feel that this student has pro potential! I don't want to do anything that will injure his playing. And...I do need more aux. percussionists.

thanks

jayson
