' spoken like a true jazz player who has a great knack for education. I pulled these same stunts (that I approve of wholeheartedly, btw) on my tuba students during my last romp with university teaching, and the students were all incredulous at first. As soon as they tried their luck at this, they all realized that they had no skills in this area and just how not-well-rounded they were musically. Each week, the last 15 minutes of the lessons were either duets, "Play-what-I-play.", or "Play [God Bless America / Rocky Top / Go Tell it on the Mountain / WHATEVER] in [ Eb / D / Ab / WHATEVER KEY]". A couple of them got to where they could play some songs by ear at the end of the year...and their sight reading skills improved from this without spending as much time working on sight reading per se.
