Arban used this system on his cornet. Paul Bernard's "Complete Method for Tuba and Bass Saxhorn" (Alphonse Leduc, Paris) gives fingering charts based on this system. Most old top-action euphoniums and tubas have third-valve slides long enough to be pulled out an extra half-step, apparently so that this system can be used when it is convenient. But what you gain in range is lost in intonation accuracy and in alternate fingerings. For further discussion visit my website.
