Slow, sustained playing down into the pedal range is good for loosening up tight muscles after tensing up. I have a problem with chronic muscle tightness after playing for a long time, and this is the only thing that works for me. Scales and arpeggios, not too loud and way down low can relax you, at least for a while.
The Maggio trumpet method increases range and endurance by alternating high exercises with pedal-note playing. Forced relaxation (oxymoron?) is the key.
