Just thought I'd jump in real quick with a different little point.

Maybe a director doesn't have to choose exactly music that is challenging to the tubist, but that is at least interesting to play. There's nothing worse than playing an awful song (no matter what the tuba part) and nothing greater than playing an absolute goose-bumps and chills piece (no matter what the tuba part).

maybe it's just my youngness making this a point, but hearing great music put together in pieces all around me is a thing I'd not miss even if I ONLY had monotone whole notes through every one.

hehe, I'm not saying I don't wish I have a tuba solo every time new music is passed out, or the low brass gets 90% of the cool melody part, but I'm still as filled (almost ^_^) by seeing good friends get the parts instead knowing I'm making them sound better by me being as in tune as I can with my 30-odd measures of whole notes as well as saving the oh-so-loved-and-stressed director some frustration.

hmm, I can't really describe it that well, but I hope you see what I'm saying here. I hope...
