Due to a wild train braking procedure the bell of my beloved Conn 28 D French horn ended up with a slight wrinkle running from a few inches above the bell rim to just above the hand-stopping/mute contact area.

Despite the railway rejecting its responsibilities I could have afforded a repair. But my well experienced repairman would give me only one guarantee of the potential repairjob: the sound would brighten up.

I love the span between the dark warmth of the piano and the full brightness of the ff of the 28D. But I hardly would like all of the spectre turned 1, 2, or 3 notches towards the bright side.

So as all of my mutes stayed tight (due to the flexibility of the cork seals), and as my hand stopping still worked, I chose to abstain from a repair.
