I think you should try this idea out; you can't patent a cable-operated valve (it's been done, and the patents have expired), but you might be able to patent the specific application and all that you need to invent to get it to work reliably. For example, the patent might cover the mechanism to make the valves easily removable for lubrication and cleaning. This idea, taken to implementation, could be of great interest today, with the attention being paid to repetative stress injuries.
