Al, You can get a stand like the one pictured from Low Brass Werks (BBS advertiser) or any of the other "usual sources" for roughly 100-140 dollars, depending on the size of the tuba. Maker is K&M from Germany. I don't care WHAT anyone says about "protection"-while this is not UN-important, the fact is that in a lil dorm room or small studio when you're in college, the hardest thing to afford is floor space. These upright stands are the BEST way to maximize floor space AND work better than standing a horn on the bell (where in tight quarters it can get stepped upon.) Also a HUGE added plus is that the horn is readily access-able for practice, when one is busy sometimes the HARDEST thing to do is take the horn out of a case or gig bag, if it is in it's stand, and the music stand and metronome are nearby, its MUCH easier to get practice time in when your schedule is tight. I think the priorities of practice and safe floor-space win out over the priority of keeping a tuba pristine.
