The four bassoons should have been one octave lower than the two Opheclide. Therefore, it should have been easier to hear the four bassoons, not harder. In many performances, the two tubas play in octaves. While that does give a lot of power, it completely covers over the four bassoons. IMHO, two light sounding F tubas in the upper octave (as written), with 6 to 8 bassoons in the lower octave, would really do the trick. Who, however, would ever pay for that.

Also, the bells are usually played one octave too high. Great bells exist on the new Telarc recording, with Paavo Jarvi conducing the Cincinatti Symphony.
