Many students associate a particular timbre change with volume. They get a nasty growl in their sound which doesn't really carry that far, ie low sound pressure. They think they are projecting well. Someone else with a well focussed and relaxed sound can carry better and thus achieve higher sound pressures without sounding nasty. They also blend better and make more efficient use of their air.

The nasty sound I speak of is similiar to the distorted sound a small boombox would make when turned up to 10. It must be loud because it is all the way up?
