listen, guys, I'm not knocking the Bernstein/CSO 7th at all. Afterall, the original question was what Shostakovich 7th was radically different, interpretively speaking (I'm paraphrasing). However, even if the sound is messed around with on Teldec's N.Y. recordings in some fashion, I still think Masur's 7th sounds better overall than the DG one. Also, I just don't want to hear the 7th played that slowly each and every time - but that's just me. No doubt about it, the Bernstein one is very unique and very powerful. I actually like its quiet parts more than the loud ones, because they're so creepy and eerie (desolate sounding) at those slower tempi. Either way - can't lose.
