If the brown patina is nice and uniform, why not leave it on? It sounds as if this baby is a real antique and she deserves to show off her character. A gentle cleaner like Simple Green should get all of the exterior dirt off without affecting the patina.
This advice is from a guy who normally takes an old horn and buffs it to a mirror finish. But helicons are different. They should look old IMHO.
