I often take breaks during practice. I have noticed that as I age I take fewer breaks and spend more time in strict practice. I think it is a concentration thing. Obviously a senior in college should be able to focus more intently on their practice than a young frosh. As long as you get what you need done, both styles seem effective. I remember a story, probably from this very BBS, about a great horn player who would practice 5 times a day for 45 minute intervals. Whatever works....
