Honestly, I would rather have grit scratches around the rim of my bell, rather than on ever bow that sticks out on the backside of my horn. If you have to set it down, without having large enough piece of cloth, towel, or case nearby, set it on the bell, carefully, and make sure no one will knock it over for you. If you can't stay near it, then your best choice would be to put it back in it's case or holder.
