I'm with you on this one. I have avoided this thread because I can make any horn sound bad. But the Besson Stratford on which I started playing again as an adult almost ruined me forever. It had terrible intonation, the leadpipe hit me mid-forehead, the un-manning device on the bottom was on more than one occasion close to being successful, and it sounded terrible. Other than that, it was fine.

I moved the leadpipe down, cutting off three inches in the process (which improved the horn in a variety of ways), shortened several of the valve slides so that at least the intonation problems would be on both sides of correct, removed the ball, and installed a receiver for a proper mouthpiece. After all that, it was merely a bad horn. I'd have taken a 321 any day.

The Sanders/Cerveny budget horn that I bought to replace that Besson was a dream-come-true. For a while.
