I agree with your post re: a realistic tuba "performance" degree program.
I also agree with you that once the "history of western music" passes the beginning of the 20th Century, "formal" music school music historians get sidetracked into compositional technique dead-ends and present these dead-ends to their students as mainstream - even to the point of encouraging composition students to "continue in these dead-end 'traditions' ".
